About Me

My name's Adam, I'm 30 and from the West Midlands region of England in the UK. I've been modelmaking and painting for around twenty years.Adam Bagley. Formerly Redditch, Worcestershire.
I remember becoming interested in the hobby by seeing my father's remote controlled Tamiya miltary models in action around the back garden. Add to this the heavy presence of models in films such as Star Wars and Jason and the Argonauts and TV series such as Doctor Who and Gerry Anderson's Captain Scarlet and it's easy to see why I got hooked.

I've come a long way since, learning through books, clubs and plenty of trial and error. I'm always happy to share my knowledge with others and I'm still as keen as ever to learn new things and to see how others approach their work. It's because of this that the HobbyShed modelling resource has been created with sharing in mind.

I hope you enjoy your time in the shed. Modeling.

Eastnor Model & Hobbies Spectacular

Deer Park/Eastnor Castle. Near Ledbury, Herefordshire. Midlands. UK.

Held annually, the Eastnor Model and Hobbies Spectacular is an outdoor event that runs for two successive days in August in the pleasant grounds of Deer Park, adjacent to Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire, England. The photos accompanying this article were taken during my attendance in 2006.

Unfortunately, despite the title suggesting otherwise, the event offers little of interest to devotees of static modelling and wargaming. Instead it is aimed at enthusiasts of remote controlled models and if radio control is indeed your thing, you will almost certainly enjoy yourself here!

Widely spread out around a lake acting as central point, the spectacular offers plenty of visual treats. The normally quiet countryside environment is temporarily disturbed by the sounds of nitro-powered remoted controlled cars of all subjects, scales and drive types being raced around a grass track with hairpin bends and exciting ramp jumps. The air frequently buzzes with the noise from aeroplanes and helicopters demonstrated in turn to the crowds by their owners. Even the lake ripples from the many battleships, narrowboats, tugs and speed boats travelling on its surface!

ABOVE: Many aeroplanes and helicopters wait for their turn to take to the skies. Skill and stunt flying demonstrations pleased the large crowds gathered behind the barrier

Many of the displays are organised by model clubs from all over the UK, providing those who have travelled far with an opportunity to discover clubs and events nearer to home. Almost all of the club members I got talking to were friendly, approachable and armed with flyers to hand out! If I had to pick fault, it would be with the dominating presence of boat enthusiasts in comparison with other r/c subjects. In particular, I found ground and air based military subjects to be greatly underrepresented.

Of course, there were plenty of dealers in attendance offering new, used, scarce, discontinued and, most importantly, discounted products.

ABOVE: A moderate selection of remote controlled tanks including a couple of radio controlled WWII German Tiger I tanks in 1/6th scale were seen in action at the event

As far as I could gather, the "hobbies" part of the events title referred to arts and craft materials for sale under one giant circus-style marquee (I'm guessing the intention of this was to keep many a wife or partner occupied whilst the other half scarpered off to play with their toys). Other attractions included a falconry display, fun fair and an enjoyable battle re-enactment complete with walk-through pre-battle camp site.

ABOVE: Radio controlled models aside, entertainment for visitors to the Eastnor Model & Hobbies Spectacular included a very noisy period battle re-enactment and camp site

The event itself was well organised and fairly easy to get to by car, though I would imagine attendance using public transport would prove problematic due to its remote location. As previously mentioned, the event runs for two days and overnight camping on site is a pre-book option. That said, I planned for one full days attendance but felt I'd experienced everything after just three to four hours.

ABOVE: As well as nitro-powered races elsewhere in the grounds of Deer Park, Tamiya entertained all ages with their radio controlled cars and course layout

In conclusion, I'd recommend the Eastnor Model & Hobbies Spectacular to r/c enthusiasts looking for an entertaining day out. I think two days would be really pushing it for the average attendee but, who knows, there may be enough here to entertain those deeply engrossed in this area of modelling.
