About Me

My name's Adam, I'm 30 and from the West Midlands region of England in the UK. I've been modelmaking and painting for around twenty years.Adam Bagley. Formerly Redditch, Worcestershire.
I remember becoming interested in the hobby by seeing my father's remote controlled Tamiya miltary models in action around the back garden. Add to this the heavy presence of models in films such as Star Wars and Jason and the Argonauts and TV series such as Doctor Who and Gerry Anderson's Captain Scarlet and it's easy to see why I got hooked.

I've come a long way since, learning through books, clubs and plenty of trial and error. I'm always happy to share my knowledge with others and I'm still as keen as ever to learn new things and to see how others approach their work. It's because of this that the HobbyShed modelling resource has been created with sharing in mind.

I hope you enjoy your time in the shed. Modeling.

Toy Collector's Fair

Birmingham National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham. West Midlands. UK.

Several times a year the NEC in Birmingham, central England, plays host to a giant toy collector's fair.

"How's that relevant to this site?", I hear you ask. Well, although labelled as a toy collector's fair, this venue actually caters to a far greater spectrum of people, as do many other similar events.

Amongst the hundreds of stalls selling every toy and collectable imaginable from Action Man to Zorro there's an equal amount seeing to the needs of the scale modelmaker. Every few paces you come across model kits, tools, accessories and a lot more besides ...it's all here under one giant roof! Modelers, Birmingham, modeling. West Midlands. Model club, show and event.

As well as popular models in fields such as trains and railway, science-fiction, automobiles, military and fantasy, you can expect to find unusual and specialised subjects courtesy of private dealers, importers and garage companies. Then, of course, there are the traders who sell specialist tools, materials, paints and accessories, not to mention those who make beautiful display cabinets and wargames terrain made-to-order.

Events such as this are great for making contacts. Most good dealers are knowledgeable of what they're selling and welcome your questions. Many have promotional leaflets to hand out too which is perfect for finding mail order specialists, item locator's or walk-in businesses local to you.

It's worth mentioning too that there's an abundance of reference material available. Books, DVD's, video's, blueprints and plans appear on many stalls. Perfect for gathering information on that planned conversion or scratch-build!

ABOVE: As well as displaying a large selection of diecast toys and collectables, many traders mingled in a good selection of model kits covering all manner of subjects

Bargain hunters of all skill levels can haggle themselves a decent price on individual items, rare or deleted kits, bulk purchases or job lots. Also, if you have items to sell, you can take them along to offer stall holders. You could end up leaving the event with more money than you went in with!

The fair covered here is organised and run by D J Fairs.

Located in the heart of the United Kingdom, the NEC is easily accessable by car and public transport. Perks include early bird tickets, free parking, free shuttle service from the car park to the hall, clean toilets, organised staff, disabled access and on-site catering.

In addition to the NEC, D J Fairs put on other one-day toy fairs all over the United Kingdom - great if the NEC is too far to travel to! Ticket entry prices vary from venue to venue, as do other aspects such as car parking, catering and toilet facilities. There's always the option of setting up your own table to sell from too! Visit their website for full details.

Of course, there are plenty of other organisers the world over holding similar events of all sizes all the time. I've found the best places to find such things are via toy, model and collector magazines, model shops and clubs and, perhaps most obviously, the internet.

It's worth the search for such a great time.
